Mute Soji

I found this Japanese lacquer ware in the Monocle magazine. I quite like it because it's simple and looks very homely and warm in comparison to the stainless steel items in the kitchens now. I also like it because of it's natural look and it's nice to see products pulling back away from the plastic aesthetic and moving into a more environmentally friendly and sustainable material.

The lacquer ware is made with a traditional method of yamanaka-shikki which is very simple and is mostly constructed on a lathe. It is the simplicity that makes this product so beautiful and the detailing lies within the material as well as the finish.

Asus U Series

I saw this laptop a long time ago when i was looking to buy a new laptop and i decided to post it on here because i think it's good to see companies exploring new materials. Apple are a clear example of this with their Mac Book Pro range as they're completely made out of aluminium, but that has now led to a lot of other companies following in their footsteps.

The thing i like about this product by Asus is that most people wouldn't think to combine wood with an electronic item as it's seen as weak and difficult to manufacture compared to plastic. However Asus used a dark bamboo wood for the flat surfaces to give a beautiful finish. But i feel that using plastic with this wood clashes a bit and i think an aluminium body with bamboo panels on it could be something extremely nice, and would pull away from the boring grey of modern laptops.

Charles Sheeler

Charles Sheeler was an American modernist artist during the 20th century. I've looked into his art because i like his style of painting with the simplistic shapes but with finer detail add in that subtly brings the picture to life. This is something that interests me as i could do this on illustrator but as more contemporary approach for my product design boards instead of a CAD rendering each time.
